Doom Eternal's latest patch brings back the original main menu music, for some reason | PC Gamer - sanchezcasim1959
Doom Ageless's modish temporary hookup brings back the original main menu medicine, for about reason
A teensy-weensy Condemn Eternal update rolled out earlier this week revealing a newborn Halloween-themed Mancubus coming to the spunky A part of the Ghouls, Gourds, and Galleons event, and fixing precisely one bug. But it as wel made a change that I thought was far-off more interesting than whatsoever of that: IT readjust the main menu music back to "the same as it was when Doom Eternal launched in March 2020."
It's a strange single, right? It turns out that when The Ancient Gods Part 2 showed up in March, it brought with information technology new music for the main menu. And fans noticed: Users across triple threads on Reddit and Steam ask what happened to the original music, and how they can catch on back. Mod makers eventually took the matter into their own hands, with creations like "Retired Main Menu Music" (now set to hidden, with a warning that "if ever the main menu music is changed once again, you give the axe count connected me to make a recent version of this mod") and "Mick Gordon Main Menu Theme."
There's no mention of the change in the DLC release notes, and A furthest as I know Bethesda never explained why the topic was swapped, or equal acknowledged that it happened. There is meditation, however, that Bethesda's "complicated" relationship with composer Mick Gordon is at the root of it. That first came to light in April 2020, about a month subsequently the release of Fate Lasting, when Gordon same on social media that he hadn't heterogeneous most of the official Doom Eternal soundtrack and univocal doubt that he'd work with Bethesda again in the future.
Shortly after that, however, Day of reckoning Eternal executive producer Marty Stratton explained Bethesda's side, praising Gordon A a talented composer but adding that he was intractable to work with, "creating an unsustainable pattern of project uncertainty and risk" for the studio. Yield issues affected the wait of the Doom Eternal soundtrack and eventually prompted Bethesda to have lead audio designer Chad Mossholder stitch together tracks from the game into "a comprehensive OST," which is wherefore it was so flat.
Tensions seemingly accumulated after the soundtrack was released: Gordon wasn't happy with some of the content and edits, and as wel that Mossholder was attributable as a co-composer, Stratton said, although he noted that Mossholder is actually listed Eastern Samoa a "conducive creative person." Even so, Stratton said at the clip that he was surprised to take heed Gordon express doubtfulness about working with Bethesda again, but added that "for the immediate future, we are at the point of moving on and won't be working with Mickey on the DLC we currently have in production." It's non too much of a stretch to guess that swapping out some of Gordon's non-gameplay music might have been part of that "moving on" process.
This is Mick Gordon's original main menu euphony:
And this is the Day of reckoning Ageless: The Ancient Gods Part Two menu tune, composed by David Levy. IT's a similar vibe, but very diametrical:
The bulk of the reactions to the switch appear pleased that Gordon's music has been returned, although there's definitely appreciation for the Levy take as well. Quite an few fans want Bethesda to impart a bill of fare option sanctioning players to switch the menu music at will: "Real nice that the Mick Gordon menu music is back, rather missed it," YaBoyTony wrote, capturing the mood of the moment. "Although I think I might take up missing the David Levy menu base now, thought it slapped pretty hard."
What International Relations and Security Network't clear is wherefore the main carte music was changed in the first place, or why Bethesda electoral to alteration it back six months subsequently. I reached out to entirely attached earlier this week—Bethesda, Gordon, Levy, and Past Gods co-composer Andrew Hulshult—to visit if anyone is willing to clue me in, and I'll update if they do.
Chastening: The article originally declared that Bethesda's dispute with Mickey Gordon came to light in April 2021, after the release of The Ancient Gods Part Ii. It really took berth in April 2020, following the launch of the groundwork game.
